Choosing a senior portrait photographer can be a daunting task especially if this is your first time. These photos will capture a milestone moment in your child's life so it's important to choose the right one. Here are some tips to help you choose the right photographer:
Look at their website: Take a look at the photographer's previous work to get an idea of her style and to see if it aligns with your vision for your senior's portraits.
Check reviews and recommendations: Look for reviews and recommendations from previous clients. You can also ask friends and family members if they have any recommendations.
Consider their experience: Look for a photographer with experience in senior portrait photography. Make sure they understand how to use light and pose the senior. They will know how to make your son or daughter feel comfortable in front of the camera and bring out their best.
Check their availability: Make sure the photographer is available on the date you want your son or daughter's portraits taken. In WI, senior portraits are typically taken the summer after their junior year. Summer is a busy time, with sports and vacations, so book your photographer as soon as possible to ensure availability. If your son or daughter is a fall athlete, be sure to schedule their session in June or July so it doesn't interfere with practice starting in August.
Meet with the photographer: Schedule a consultation with the photographer to discuss your vision for senior portraits, ask any questions you may have, and get to know them. This will help you determine if they are the right fit for you. When you meet with the photographer, they can show you samples of prints and products and explain if they offer digital files as well. By considering these 5 things, you can find a senior portrait photographer that will capture the essence of who your senior is and create lasting memories, and heirloom prints, that you will cherish for years to come.

I value the power of prints. Our world is constantly changing, but some things are simply timeless — like the power of printed photos. Yes, print your stuff! In the age of cellphones and social media platforms like IG, Snapchat, TikTok, and FB where pictures last a few minutes to a few months, it's important to have prints that will last a lifetime. I have a photo of my great grandparents' wedding, a baby picture of my grandma, graduation picture of my mom, and many photo albums filled with pictures of my kids growing up. Teenagers take more photos than any other generation, but will have very few to show years from now. They're stored on your phone or in the cloud or on an external drive. All of those can fail, and probably will. Prints last more than a lifetime. You'll have pictures to show your grandchildren and your mom can slowly look through your album once you've gone off to college.
Are you one of those seniors who doesn't even want to think about having senior pictures done? I hear I'm not pretty or handsome enough, I need to lose a few pounds, my hair is horrible, I have acne, I'm not smart, or funny, or athletic or... or....or.... Let me tell you, you are perfect, as you! Once you get in front of my camera, your confidence and personality shines through. YOU ARE ENOUGH!
Am I the photographer for everyone? No, but if you value having me with you every step of the way; if you value heirloom prints, if you value having your personality & confidence shine through, then I AM the photographer for you! Let's schedule a consultation.

At the time, I was doing mostly landscape photography and some sports photography for my kids' teams. While in Door County, I got up the nerve to ask if a gallery I was in would be willing to carry my work. After seeing what I did, they were thrilled and I walked out with an exclusive contract!
Fast forward to sports season. I was taking pictures of the soccer team Austin was on and made a collage for one of the players who brought Austin to & from school and practice everyday. Soon, other parents were asking if I would design one for their athlete and I was in business! When I would take them to be printed the owner of the shop would always ask me if I was shooting seniors and I would explain that I wasn't a portrait photographer. Well, after getting tired of him asking all the time, I decided to take 3 girls out and do a session. Guess what???? I loved it!!!
So, my job getting cut was actually a blessing in disguise, because it allowed me to do something I was passionate about. I have met so many amazing families throughout the last 10 years and I love every one of the seniors I have the privilege of shooting.
I've photographed a few weddings, but they're just not my thing. I feel most at ease with seniors and sports photography. By doing that, I often have the families come to me for a family portrait before their son or daughter leaves for college.
Today, I work with many high school teams around the Fox Valley designing posters, banners and trading cards to promote their team. I also photograph around 25 seniors each summer/fall and some of their families. I have the best of both worlds. I get to teach physical education AND be a photographer!! I've also done quite a few business portraits, some newborn and maternity sessions, but my passion is my seniors.
I still have my landscape work at the George Burr Gallery, in Ephraim. Getting out into nature is my way to de-stress and relax. Mother Nature is amazing!!

After a year of socially distancing, not seeing family and friends or shopping, I'm feeling more hopeful. In March, I get the vaccine and if we all continue to do our part, I'm hoping there's an end in sight. I've sewn far too many masks (as my students say, Ms Weigman, you have A LOT of masks!) What can I say, I like variety!!!
Anyway, I've already booked 4 seniors, which usually never happens until after May. I'm only taking a maximum of 30 seniors this year, and I have a feeling those spots will go quickly! I'm looking forward to meeting the Class of 2022 and give them some amazing images to remember this time in their lives. Senior year is such a milestone, that you want to make sure to document it with senior portraits.
Want to include your pet, car, sports or music? No problem! I have a session just for YOU! All my sessions are done on location and YOU get to choose the place. If you don't know, I have some suggestions based on your interests and personality.
Don't miss out on your preferred date or the limited sessions in Waupaca & Door County. Call me to get more information and book YOUR session. 920-475-5933

Many of you may be thinking..."it's only January and my son/daughter is only a junior! Why should I be booking my son or daughter's senior portrait session now?" Well, the answer is, that before you know it, it's going to be June, your senior will have graduated, and many of the prime session dates will be taken already. By booking now, you'll get the week or day you want, and your senior can be sure that they don't get scheduled for work that day. Plus, many photographers have a limited number of sessions they offer.
I only accept 30 seniors, and only 1 each day, to be sure that I can give each of them a quality experience. It's so fun to watch them shine in front of the camera and for me to capture their true personality. If they love sports or music, let's include that in their session! Do they love horses? No problem! We can go to the stable. Pets? We'll choose a pet friendly location and someone can bring the pet at the beginning or end of the session.
As for choosing your location I have different ideas for urban, country, industrial, woodsy or flowers. By booking now, I can suggest the best time for your session date to get the exact location you desire! Does Door County hold a special place in your heart? I'm offering 3 sessions there this summer between the last week in July and the first week in August. These sessions are highly sought after and book quickly. We can shoot at Cave Point on the edge of Lake Michigan, or in the small towns of Ephraim, Fish Creek or Sister Bay that lie on the banks of the Bay of Green Bay. Sunsets are beautiful in Door County!
Send me an email [email protected] or give me a call 920-475-5933 and we can get a session on the calendar for YOUR senior!
]]>There were blessings though. I was able to offer yard signs to seniors in the area and made some money to keep my business afloat. I learned how to send invoices, figured out a schedule for pick up and had people pick them up from my front porch. I had moms in tears because they said it was the only thing they could do for their senior not having a graduation. I was deeply touched by some of their stories while we talked through the glass door. I was able to go camping twice over the summer and although it wasn't the same, I was still in my happy place. The greatest blessing though, was the birth of my first grandbaby! Noah arrived 3 weeks early, but was healthy and perfect. I can't get enough of that little peanut!
When I was finally able to reopen my business, we had to adhere to the restrictions that were in place. With outdoor sessions, everyone felt a little safer. When the mask mandate was issued, my clients were more than happy to wear a mask while inside the studio for their ordering session. Without the support of all of my 2020 clients, I couldn't have done it.
To my clients, I can't thank you enough. Please know that I appreciate you all, more than you know. Whether I did senior portraits, family portraits or sports work for you...Thank you! You truly helped me survive one of the toughest years many of us have ever faced.
Please continue to support ALL small businesses, and as soon as they can reopen, be sure to especially support those in the hospitality, event, and entertainment industries.
Happy New Year, everyone, I can't wait to see YOU in 2021 and make some amazing artwork for your walls!

I have some great news! I became a Grandma a little early. On July 5th, Noah James was born and he is perfect. My heart melted and I am in love with him! Because he came early, I'm able to add a few more session dates to my schedule in July!
All my July dates were filled, so this means that I can accept a few more seniors!! Yay! If you haven't booked your session yet, please check out my website at Kathy Weigman Photography If you're interested, send me an email [email protected] or give me a call at 920-475-5933. We can talk about your session and I can send you a copy of my Senior Welcome Magazine. These are not your parent's senior pictures! YOU choose the location, YOU choose the looks you want, YOU choose to include your sports and activities into the session.
Call soon! I'll also add a $25 discount on any of my July sessions!!

Somedays I feel like this squirrel.... hanging on and trying to figure out the next step!
Because photography sessions were considered non-essential, my studio was closed from March to the beginning of June. I took a cautious approach and opened the middle of June, doing only outdoor sessions. I've had 4 sessions already, and have more seniors booked for July and August.
We're back in business, but things have changed a little bit due to the Covid-19 Virus. We're following the CDC guidelines by socially distancing during our sessions, and having clients bring their own props. Because I normally use a zoom lens, and stand at least 6 feet from my clients, nothing has really changed in that regard. You still get the great photographs you've come to expect from Kathy Weigman Photography.
We're still looking at how we'll do our in person viewing and ordering sessions. We'll either set up the studio so that clients can be at one table and I can be at another table, at least 6 feet away. The area will be sanitized before and after each viewing session. Clients will be asked to use hand sanitizer when they arrive, and masks will be recommended. The other option is doing a Zoom viewing and ordering session. We'll monitor the WI guidelines, as well as the CDC guidelnes.
Everyone is learning as we navigate through this crazy time. We've taken a pause in life, and have hopefully rediscovered what is really important in our lives. Be safe, wash your hands, and wear a mask when out with others.
]]>I'd love to be doing front porch pictures for people, but I can't because my business is closed. I'd love to do some outdoor sessions, but I can't because I'm closed. Instead, I shelter at home and find things to do around my house. Don't get me wrong, I do go outside for walks, but I go alone. I'm not meeting with friends or visiting with family.
If you can't do what you do, do what you can. I can't take photos to help during this time, but I can sew masks for healthcare workers, so that's what I've been doing. So far, I've sewn over 50 masks. I've donated many of them to Froedtert Hospital, in Milwaukee, where my daughter in law, Nicole, works. I've made some for family and friends too, as now we're all supposed to wear one when we're out in public. Nursing homes need them as well. As you can see, Pixel wants to help too!
Safer at Home means just that. We are safer at home, and help to not spread the virus to others. Sometimes, you don't even know you're contagious for 1-2 weeks and by then, you've possibly infected everyone you've come in contact with. Only go out for essential trips to the grocery store or pharmacy. That doesn't mean going to the playground with your kids, meeting your friends at someone's house, having a fire and invite the neighbors over.....it means to stay at home.
We'll get through this if we all work together. I'm so appreciative to the doctors, nurses, EMTs and other healthcare workers, as well as the essential workforce who gets food to the stores and keeps them running.
When we do get through this, I can't wait to start photographing all my seniors again and do some fall family sessions. To show my appreciation to ALL my clients, past & present, I'm going to be offering something I've never done before. Family mini sessions. As soon as things have settled down and are back to normal (whatever the new normal will be,) I'll get information out to everyone through email and my website.
In the meantime. Stay at home, and stay safe.
]]>i am booking senior portrait sessions, but they won’t happen until June, and then only if it’s deemed safe. Contact me if you’re interested in talking about a senior portrait session.
in the meantime, take photos of your children, family and the world around you. Here are some tips for taking a better photo. Haul out your point and shoot camera, or just use your cell phone, chrome book or iPad. The best camera is the one you have with you.
*If you don’t have flash, use soft window light to light your subject.
*Get some candid shots of your kids doing online learning or dancing.
*Get up close and fill the frame.
*Look from different angles before pressing the shutter button. Shoot from down low, or from above, or from the side.
*Do some fun shots with distortion. Remember, whatever is closest to the camera will look the largest.
Just have some fun, practice isolation and social distancing, and connect with your family. Even in uncertain times, being made to stay at home, with your family, can be a gift. I can’t wait to pick up my camera again and start creating memories with my clients. 💕

I know you're probably not thinking about senior portraits because it's winter! But, actually, now is the best time to seek out your senior portrait photographer and get your date in the books. I'm also looking for a few awesome juniors ( who will graduate in 2020) to be reps for my studio! If you commit now, we can get some great winter photos for your portfolio. Simply fill in the application at the top of my website and submit it. If you want to be a spokesmodel (aka rep) for Kathy Weigman Photography, you can be! All I expect is that you like to be in front of the camera and like to have fun! Other studios only accept one or two from each area school, but I think the more I have, the more fun it will be! Apply today, and I'll send you information about the program and perks! Afterall, everyone loves perks!!
]]>When I'm doing a portrait session, I have always used either a reflector or off camera flash, to get the proper exposure. I've also learned how to use editing software like lightroom and photoshop. During my last session, I decided to take a few before and after shots just to show people what it looks like. Many times, people don't see the difference when only shown one photo.
This is a shot I took of a baseball player. He was pulled away from the brick wall, so the wall would be out of focus and not detract from the player. The picture on the left was taken with just available sunlight, and you can see that he has deep shadows under the brim of his cap and his hair is barely visible. He's got dark shadows on his eyes giving him, what I call, raccoon eyes. He looks nice though with his expression.
The shot on the right was taken with a flash, inside a 40" softbox about 2 feet from him. Just that little pop of light takes away the shadows under his cap, takes away the raccoon eyes, and puts those tiny catchlights in his eyes, making them "pop." Seen side by side, the right one looks much more pleasing.
Then there's the use of editing software. Seniors want images that are different and show their personality and what their interests are. I LOVE being able to offer sportraits to my senior clients! It gets them excited about their session, and gives them images that will last a lifetime. The shot on the left is the one that came out of my camera. The shot on the right is his final image. Which image would you choose? I know my seniors will pick the one on the right!!
When choosing a photographer look at their portfolio, look for light in their clients eyes, and look for how they edit their final portraits. It's not always about price, rather who can give you what you're looking for. Check out the various photographers in the Fox Valley and choose the one that's right for YOU!

]]>SENIOR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
Before you know it, you and your son or daughter will be looking for a photographer to take his or her senior portraits. Most high school students have their portraits done the summer before their senior year. A senior portrait is one of the milestone portraits in a person’s life and can be a big investment. So, how do you choose a senior portrait photographer that is right for your son or daughter?
If you’re interested in looking at what I have to offer, please check out my website www.KathyWeigmanPhotography.com for portraits I’ve done. As a teacher, mom and photographer, I have a good rapport with high school students. Their session is fun and relaxed, and you get quality portraits at an affordable price. One of the greatest compliments I've received from a parent was that I made her daughter feel so confident; "Her self esteem soared during the session with Kathy." Another parent said that they chose me for their daughter's session because I didn't make my seniors look plastic. I brought out their inner beauty and captured their real personality. If you have any questions or would like to book a session, please feel free to contact me at 733-3425 or [email protected]

This weekend we celebrate a day for moms. What is the best gift you could receive? For some moms, it might be a day spent on her own....at the spa, shopping, or just sitting on a beach. For others, it might be a restaurant meal or a gift she's wanted. For others, it might be the chaos of having her kids around and just being together.
Now that my kids are grown, I miss that chaos. I miss the mother's days that I spent on the soccer field during a tournament. I miss the gifts, chosen with care, from The Dollar Tree. I miss the messiness of the house and having their friends over. I miss their presence.
Wherever you are in the journey of motherhood, enjoy it! Relish the moment.
]]>Another year has almost ended and another one is about to begin. It's a time to look back and reflect. Each year, I look back at the year in my photography. What could I do to improve? What things am I proud of? Where will my business head in 2016? What will my personal life have in store for me?
2015 brought lots of joys and a few disappointments, but with each day, I grew. My clients appreciate my photography, but they don't know how much I love and appreciate them. I learn their story - who they are, what their dreams are, and sometimes what their struggles are. I feel as though they become part of my family. I absolutely LOVE every senior that I've photographed over the years. Sometimes, I even get to photograph them with their families and I get to know all of them too. It's an amazing job! I tried to pick out my top 10 favorite portraits of 2015, but came up with over 30! I've decided that it's impossible to choose only 10, so I'm not even going to try!
I've also had a few photo adventures with friends over the year. I went to my first photography conference in St. Louis and learned so much and had a blast following the Mississippi back home! I went to a night sky photography conference in Two Harbors (just north of Duluth) and met so many people who love photographing the night sky as much as I do. Of course, I spent a few weeks in Door County over the summer camping and exploring. I've also done a few day trips with friends just to get out. I'm able to slow down, and look at nature through the viewfinder of my camera. It's a great way to de stress, and notice the beauty that's all around us. I even won the editors choice award for one of my photos this year! With the prize, I was able to take Austin & Jenna to The White Gull Inn for breakfast. One of my favorite restaurants in Door County.
So, I tried to choose 10 of my favorite landscape photos, but added a few extras :) I wish you well for 2016. Look at each day with gratitude, and be thankful for all that you have. Enjoy the beauty all around you.
~Kathy
There seems to be so many people struggling lately with different issues. It's in the news and I hear it from my friends - drug deaths in the Fox Valley, missing adults and children, health issues, mental illness, loneliness, family and marriage struggles, worries about jobs and finances. Each day is a gift, but some days it may be hard to see the beauty of the day beyond the struggles.
Everyone has their own struggles and they are no more or no less than any one else's struggles. They are THEIR personal struggles. Many times you don't know what the struggles are of your friends or coworkers. Be kind, and understand that we are all on a journey that holds twists and turns, ups and downs.
Even with the struggles of everyday life, each day is a gift. I walked around my yard today, with my camera and took a few shots of the beauty that surrounds me each day. Take a minute to see the beauty that surrounds YOU!
Will she have any? Will they all be on a computer that crashed years ago, or on a CD that has since become corrupt? We take more pictures than any other generation but have fewer prints than any other generation as well. Think about technology..... how many of you have the ability to play an 8 track tape, or get files you put on a floppy disc? The same holds true for photos. Many computers don't even come with a CD drive anymore!
Have professional portraits done and purchase prints! Do you have tons of pictures on your iphone? Print them! Photos on your tablet? Print them! Most labs have the technology to print right from your phone. As a photographer, I take tons of pictures with my expensive camera, but I also take them with my iphone. A picture of Austin & me in front of his dorm (the same one I lived in), a selfie of me and my mom, a picture of my 2 boys playing disc golf. I printed them!
In 20 years when my kids ask for pictures of their grandparents to share with their kids, I'll haul out my photo album and hand them over. I won't be giving them a disc.
One last thought.... If there were a disaster and you had to flee your house what one thing would you take with you? For me, it wouldn't be my tv, or my wallet, it would definitely be my photo albums. I'm SO lucky to have these portraits. One is of my great-great grandfather at his wedding, and the other is of my mother as a little girl.
It's seems like just a little while ago that I was photographing all these amazing seniors and now, they're ready to graduate from high school and move on to bigger things!
I'm SO fortunate to have spent a little bit of time getting to know these young men and women. They each have a story, unique personality, so many different talents and were GREAT to work with. I learn so much from them, and I'm so honored that they chose me to do their senior portraits.
I wish them nothing but the best in years to come and look forward to seeing the amazing things they do with their lives. Good luck and best wishes <3
~Kathy
We spent some time walking through the Art Museum, pictured above, then headed over to the zoo. Who doesn't like the zoo? And with the temps in the 70's, and me wearing capris and flip flops, it was a great way to spend the afternoon! Lions, zebras and crazy birds, oh my!
One of the other places that was recommended that we go to was The Hill. The highest point in the City, The Hill had German and Irish immigrants working the clay mines. Italians seeking a new future in America came to the area to work those same clay mines and made The Hill their neighborhood in the 1890’s. The Hill has been home to some of Saint Louis City’s most nationally known residents, including baseball heroes Joe Gargiola and Lawrence “Yogi” Berra. We ate at one of the local restaurants that had an abandoned warehouse across the street. If only we could have gotten in there! :) We loved the houses in this area, long and narrow and very close together. We left for Hannibal, just as a big thunderstorm hit.
The next day we spent the day in Hannibal. We went up to Lovers Leap, and took the tour of Cameron Cave, where Mark Twain explored as a child. It is the setting for the caves in his writings of The Adentures of Tom Sawyer. We went to the river and spent some time at the Riverboats and the Lighthouse. Had a great lunch at a local Brew Pub, then headed north along the Mississipi.
We ended our day in Davenport, IA where we were treated to a fantastic sunset over the Mississippi. Sometimes, you just have to pull over to the side of the road :)
We spent the night in Davenport after dinner at one of my favorite places - Steak 'N Shake! The next day we headed home, and stopped for a quick hike at Governor Dodge State Park just outside of Madison.
It was an amazing week, spent with some great friends. Life is definitely an adventure, especially when you travel with photographers <3
]]>
I went to the event with 3 other photographers from the Fox Valley. We left early Monday morning and arrived in St. Louis at 3:00. We checked into our room, got registered for Shutterfest and then headed out to explore the city.
We ventured downtown toward the arch but decided to head back for dinner and to meet up with other photographers for a nighttime arch shoot. We shot the Arch from across the river on the IL side. The sunset was marred by too many clouds, but the night skyline was beautiful!
We had to find a place to watch the Wisconsin - Duke game. We had hoped for a better outcome. Oh well......... we all headed back to the hotel to go to sleep, only I couldn't sleep. After watching tv, laying in the dark, checking facebook, and watching Netflix I got up at 6:00 to start my day! A Diet Coke and I was good to go!
The days were filled with different classes about marketing, mastering your online brand, and building referrals. My hands on classes were Extreme Sports Photography with Melanie Anderson and Pricing and Packaging with Sal Cincotta. I'm SO excited to offer more unique sports photography to my seniors and I'll be offering collections this year instead of just a la carte products! The models we had for our class were great!
That night, we decided to try to find a model and use our off camera lighting to do some shots. This is one of the shots I got that night with Joshua & Bayleigh. They were super to work with!
Thankfully, this night I was able to fall asleep. Since being sick on Easter and all the travelling, I really needed the rest! The next morning we were up bright and early again to start our classes. I was thrilled to be going to a photoshop class about compositing with Dave Cross. I've watched tons of tutorials on photoshop by him. I learned about a great organization program called 17 hats, listened to another speaker about workflow and how to speed things up. My last class for the day was with Jeff Poole & Lori Unruh about Senior Portraits with a Punch. Finding the right location and looking for things and angles that make for an interesting portrait. Again, we were blessed with some great models to shoot. Dalton was great to work with!
After dinner the storms had ended so we headed out to the area next to the hotel to do some night shooting. The 4 of us had a blast and laughed so hard at the things we were doing. Light painting, long exposures and a few selfies.
After that I thought we were going to head in to the party, but we decided to head to the Arch instead! It took us forever to figure out how to get there because of the construction, but we finally ended up parking in a church driveway and walking there. The spot lights go off at midnight, but we had lots of available light. Such a beautiful place!
Well, that's the end of the conference, but it's not the end of my adventure! Instead of heading straight back to Appleton, we decided to spend a day in St. Louis and then travel home by following the Mississippi River. Stay tuned for my next blog entry where I'll let you know the rest of the adventure!
]]>I'll be taking classes on Extreme Sports Photography, Senior Portrait Photography, Using Photoshop for Compositing (using multiple photos to make one amazing photo), Off Camera Lighting, Gels, Marketing, Branding, Referrals and Workflow. In between, I'll be getting out with other photographers to shoot and network and, if there's time, sleep and eat!
The first night there, we're going to be doing a cityscape shoot at the Arch. Then, there's the print competition with critique. I've even entered one of my senior portraits from last summer. YIKES! But, I figure it's a great way to learn. There were so many great shots that it was hard to choose one. I finally decided on this shot of Brittany. I used off camera flash and the sky had great clouds in the background. Like all my seniors, Brittany was delightful. She's as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside!
Once the conference is finished, I'm staying in St. Louis for another day, with 2 other photography friends, and then heading home along the Mississippi River to see what we can find. It's going to be so much fun and I can't wait to use all the new techniques with my senior portrait
sessions this summer.

I just read an article today that talks about the fact that many of this generation will not leave any pictures for their kids and grandkids. We take more pictures than ever before with the invention of smart phones, tablets and digital cameras, but we are printing less and less. These great photos end up in our phones, on our hard drives or on a CD. The bad thing about this - all of these fail. Phones break, hard drives crash and CDs become corrupt. A photo in an album, in a frame or even in a box will last forever. PRINT YOUR PHOTOS!
When you're looking for a photographer, don't limit yourself - check out the ones who offer prints. I want you to have heirloom portraits that will be around for years to come. When is the last time that you went into someone's home and they had a silver CD framed and on the wall? Digitals are meant for sharing, but portraits are meant for hanging and sharing for many years to come.

]]>The girls decided on a theme that incorporated fog. I'm definitely up for that! I arrived at Xavier with my friend, Jennifer, and we set up our background and lighting and then decided how the girls would be posed. Bring in the fog machine........and a tiny glitch. Fog machines may set off smoke alarms and with a Christmas Stars performance going on in the theatre we decided that would not be a good thing to have fire alarms going off and have to clear the theatre. Plan B. We photographed the girls, they went to practice, we went to lunch, then came back and used the theatre, with the help of Jim R. to photograph the fog. "You can just photoshop the fog in, right?" Of course I can..... I think......maybe. After some trial and error, we got the lighting right and the fog and I was able to make a composite picture of the girls and the fog!
Bring on the Mock Trial Team! They had a really cute idea with a play on the words, You've Been Served. I love it! We want to photograph the team in the gym and practice doesn't start until 4:00 so we've got about 15 minutes. Oh my! Not to worry. I set up my lights at center court right on the X, then get the team members positioned. Only problem is, we have basketball players to our left and basketball players to our right. Talk about photo bombs! The coaches helped us keep them away so we got out shots in and turned out a great poster for them!
A few weeks before that, the NHM Hockey Team wanted a poster done to advertise for their upcoming season. They decided they wanted to go with a theme that showcased hard work. We had talked about getting a dump truck or some sort of work truck, but that wasn't able to happen. We met in the parking lot of the Ice Arena, and right in the middle of the parking lot was an electric truck! We took advantage of our good luck and used the truck as the backdrop to the picture! There's even a team logo on the bucket of the truck :)
]]>The church was filled with love as they said their vows to each other, and Brittany didn't shed a tear! It's such an emotional day, especially when you marry your best friend! After church the bridal party headed downtown for some group photos and a little celebrating before heading over to the dinner venue.
Again, the reception hall was beautifully decorated, the cupcake cake looked delicious and all their guests were having a great time!
Matt & Brittany, I am so honored to have been your wedding photographer. It was a great day and one that I will always remember. Love to both of you <3
]]>
I just know it's going to be an amazing day! Stay tuned for pictures from their wedding.
]]>
I started the day out at their home, where they were all getting ready for the big occasion. Talk about relaxed! At least on the outside they were all cool, calm and collected. Relaxed enough to even have some pizza before leaving for the ceremony! The park setting was beautiful and everything went perfectly! Tom & Amy celebrated the day with their children as their attendants, along with both their extended families. You could just feel the love and happiness that everyone shared with the bride and groom. Congratulations Tom & Amy!! <3

I can't believe how quickly summer going! It seems as though we just got out of school and already it's almost July 4th! Senior portrait sessions are in full swing and I am having SO much fun! Each high school senior I meet has been so polite, eager to start their senior year, and excited about their portrait session.
Portrait sessions should be fun and relaxed. I got the best compliment this week from one of the moms who came along with her daughter to her session. "You just know how to relate to these kids and make them feel at ease. You capture their true personality." That's the best thing that someone could say to me, as a photographer. That's my goal. To capture your son or daughter's true spirit and emotion. If I can do that, I feel as though I've succeeded.
I've met so many amazing young men and women who have goals and dreams after graduation. I'm honored that I can be in just a small part of their lives as their senior portrait photographer.
If you're still looking for a photographer for family portraits or high school senior portraits, I still have a few session dates available in Mid July and into August. Call, to set up YOUR appointment! 920-733-3425.
]]>In the meantime, I found some information on a blog from Digital Photography School that talks about how to get perfect focus in your photos. This blog was written by Elizabeth Hatford and has some great information.
A Post By: Elizabeth Halford
Recently, I posted that my biggest frustration is improper focus. If you use a point-and-shoot, the solution it pretty simple. You hold down the shutter button halfway until focus is achieved and then push it the rest of the way down. The only reason you’d be likely to end up with poor focus is, as I said before, you’re shooting in an improper mode. For example, you’re shooting a landscape in macro mode.
For us DSLR users, focus becomes another monster all together.
The first thing to consider is the mode you’ve set for your camera. In the menu, there will be an area for ‘AF Modes’. The three you may see are:
1.} One-Shot – Suitable for still subjects. Press the shutter halfway and the camera will focus only once. If the subject moves or you want to recompose the shot, you must release the shutter and press it halfway again to refocus.
2.} AI Servo – Also known as ‘continuous focus’ on a Nikon, AI Servo is used to keep a continuous focus on moving subjects until the shutter is pressed all the way. The ‘AI’ stands for ‘artificial intelligence’ and the camera uses these algorithms to predict where a subject is about to be. This is the setting to be used in sports photography and I use it with children on the go. Wikipedia’s entry on AI Servo says it so well: “Before servo focus the photographer would generally pre-focus on an area where he/she thought the best action would take place; today he/she can follow the entire sequence of events, and select the best later.” In AI Servo mode, the camera won’t beep once focus is achieved. It just keeps focusing until you decide to take the picture.
3.} Al Focus – AI Focus mode starts with normal one-shot focusing (hold the shutter down half way and it will beep when focused) but if the subject starts moving, it will switch to AI Servo mode. Certainly, this is clever of the camera, but Nikon doesn’t even have this option. Why? Your subject is either a living, breathing, moving being or it isn’t. I’m either in One-Shot or AI Servo. AI Focus just seems kind of dumb to this Canon user
In my camera (A Canon 7D) there are three AF Areas and it should be pretty much the same in most cameras.
1.} Single Point AF – this selects one spot to be used for focus. In the viewfinder, you’ll see the little square and you press the shutter halfway and the camera will beep to let you know that focus has been achieved. This mode is useful if you often follow the rule of thirds because you can focus on your subject, slowly re-compose the shot and take the photo. Your subject will be in focus.
2.} Zone AF – Focus points are organized into five different groupings, and the camera uses one of the points in the group to autofocus. Can be used in the thirds composition as above but offers a bigger area for focus, useful for tighter shots and portraits.
3.} Auto Select 19-point AF – All 19 available autofocus points are used. If multiple areas are in focus, all of these points will light up in the viewfinder. This is the mode used in full auto and creative auto modes. Pressing the shutter halfway will display the AF point(s) which have achieved focus. If multiple points are displayed, it means they all have achieved focus. This mode tends to focus the nearest subject. Great for moving subjects.

I have to preface this by saying, "Do not attempt this without finding out all the details and using safety precautions." I heard about steel wool spinning quite a few years ago and have always wanted to try it, so when Austin came home for the weekend and needed to do some light painting for his photography class and suggested spinning, I was all in!
He did the research to find out what we needed and the settings that are recommended for photographing it. He did all the spinning and I just pressed the shutter button. It was really very cool, up until the time my camera stopped working. It was snowing very heavily and I think some moisture got into my camera. It's all good now, but I was a bit worried.
This was a group effort. Along with me & Austin, we also had Jenna, Jennifer and Jef with us. Jennifer is another photographer, her husband Jef was the light man to make sure we had focus on Austin, and Jenna was the encourager :) If it hadn't been so cold, if Austin had dressed warmer, and my camera hadn't died, I'm sure we would have tried different types of light painting. We had LED lights, and glow sticks along, but didn't get to use them.
I posted the top photo on Flickr and it made explore! For those of you unfamiliar with Flickr, it's a photo sharing community. Every day Flickr chooses some of the best photos for Explore, so it was pretty neat that one of the first photos that Austin did with me made explore :)
Maybe we'll try again this summer when we're near water. We still need to use the LED lights and glow sticks. There's so much you can do with night photography!

Now, I'm not saying that you should be outside when wind chills are -40, but on a day when temps are above zero it's great to get out. Put on those long underwear and Cuddle Duds, along with a hat and mittens and your warmest jacket and take a walk. Head out to one of the local nature preserves or 1000 Islands to see the eagles, or one of the many State Parks; they have so much to offer.
You can head over to the Lakeshore and take in the beauty of a frozen Lake Michigan, or take a weekend trip up to Bayfield to see the Apostle Island Ice Caves. This phenomenon hasn't happened for 5 years. Lake Superior is frozen solid for over 15 miles out! If you don't want to go that far, head to Wequiock Falls just outside of Green Bay, or check out the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in winter or the N.E.W. Zoo in Suamico.
There is so much to see in winter, and before you know it, the snow will be gone, the temps will be in the 90's and everyone will be complaining about how hot it is!
]]>I know it's hard to believe, but it's almost time to book your senior portraits! Typically, senior portraits are done the summer before your senior year. If you're set to graduate in 2015, that's YOU!
What makes my senior portrait sessions different from other area studios, is that I offer all my sessions at any location in the Fox Valley for no additional charge! I even have one week in August where you can book a session in Door County at no additional charge! Alec, in the picture above, had his session in Door County. If you're not the on-location type of person, I also have an in-home studio where you can have your session done. I find that most seniors enjoy being outside in an area that fits their personality. It's relaxing, low-key and fun!
Each session is unique and I encourage seniors to bring along things that define who they are. Pets, cars, sports items, or anything that makes you, you.
When you call to book your session, I'll talk with you or a parent and find out the things you like to do, and find a location that fits you. Plan to spend between an hour or two at your session. We do lots of traditional poses, and lots of fun and unique poses. I guarantee you'll walk away having had a great experience!
So, in order to get the best dates for your senior session, call to book your session now. Anyone who books before March 1st, 2014 will receive an additional $50 print credit. Call now! 920-733-3425

I LOVE sports photography! Besides being able to "freeze" the action, I also get to watch lots of high school games and love the passion that they athletes have for their sport. I was at my first basketball game last night and will be going to lots more in the next few months. I have examples of collages I've done on my website under Sports Photography, and an order form under Investment. If you'd prefer, just send me an email and I can get you an order form.

This August brings a big change for me, as my baby will head off to college. I have to say that I am struggling with having him gone. I know there are many of you that will experience the "empty nest syndrome" this fall. I'm thrilled that he has found a school that really seems to fit him and that he will have the chance to continue to play the game he loves - soccer. I'm also thrilled that he will be close enough for me to get to see many of his games. It will take some getting used to coming home and not having him here. I have a great support system with family and friends and my photography keeps me really busy! Fall sports are starting soon and I'll be busy taking sports pictures, expanding into all Fox Valley Schools and designing collages for athletes. I have lots of senior portrait sessions to do in August and September and a few family sessions.
Empty nest doesn't have to mean lonely. Connect with others in the same situation, reconnect with old friends, volunteer, find a new hobby or join a club. Take advantage of things in your community like free concerts, art shows, and farmers markets. We will all survive this change in our lives.

When someone calls me to ask about scheduling a senior portrait session, I tell them that the session is fun, unique and an event that they will remember. The session, is just as important to me as the final portraits are. It's an experience, an adventure, and hopefully they leave their session feeling good about themselves.
Each of my sessions are different, and done on location. No two sessions are the same just because we never know what might happen. During a session at a park, llamas arrived and Rachael had some of her photos done with the llamas! While photographing 2 boys by a fire department, the fire chief stopped and asked if we would like to go inside and take some photos with the antique fire engines. While photographing down in The Flats, a local resident showed my client and I a "secret" location that was gorgeous! Sessions are fun, spontaneous and uniquely YOU!
If you're still looking for a photographer to take your senior portraits, or if it's been a long time since you've had a family portrait done, give me a call and we can schedule an appointment. 920-733-3425

Can I just say again, how much I love doing senior portrait sessions? I LOVE photographing high school seniors! The pictures above are some of the reasons why. They are just so much fun to interact with. I love making them feel special, and get to know a little bit about them. I also love the funny moments.
When Austin and Maddie saw the statues at Doty Park, they went and stood next to them, and were commenting on how creepy they looked because they really have no eyeballs. Of course I took a photo and then I had to tell them the story of the first time I went to Doty Park. It was a few years ago just as I started taking senior portraits and I was looking for a few different locations. It was over spring break, and I decided that the next day I would drive to Neenah and look around. Well, I woke up to over a foot of snow, but decided to go anyway. As I drove up to the park, I saw 3 people standing in the snow. I decided that if they could walk through it, so could I. So, I got out of my car and started walking toward them. I wondered why they didn't move and were just standing in one spot. You guessed it! As I got closer I found out that they were statues! I don't tell too many people that story :)
In the second shot, I had asked Austin to make a small splash, so there would be ripples in the water when I took the photo. He was a bit overzealous, and the splash got a bit big. Yes, he was soaked, but we all had a good laugh!
So, with summer over half over, there's still time to schedule a portrait session. Seniors, it's so much easier to have yours done before school starts. Give me a call, and we can set up a time for you! 920-733-3425

Last night, my baby graduated from high school. It was a beautiful and emotional ceremony at Xavier High School. The class salutatorian and valedictorian gave compelling speeches, and the commencement address by Andy Strand, the Phy. Ed. teacher was humorous and to the point. These are the things that I took away from the night....
Not everyone has an easy life, and even though you don't get what you think you want or need, things happen for a reason and you still need to do your best.
Do what you love! If money were no object, what would you do? Then do it!
F-cubed. Faith, Family, and Friends. Know that God is always with you, don't forget your family, and surround yourself with good friends.
I think we can all take something away from those 3 speakers, not just the graduates. I'm a big believer in that things happen for a reason. Looking back on my life in just the last 10 years, I see people who have come into my life just when I needed them. Coincidence? I don't think so. Is life easy? Not always. Is life worth it? Definitely!
Since as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a photographer. I used to look at Sports Illustrated and LIFE magazine and marvel at the photos. But, being a photographer was never something that I thought I could actually do, so I chose to go to college and become a teacher. Also a passion of mine. I love seeing kids succeed in doing something they struggled with. Fast forward many years, add in a job cut, and with the encouragement of friends, I started my own photography business. So, I do love what I do as a teacher AND photographer!
Faith, family and friends. Where would I be without any of them? As I look back, I can see the times that God has answered my prayers. After my divorce I struggled financially. Luckily I was really good at using coupons and saving money, but there were times when I wondered where I was going to get the $100 to pay for Eric's soccer fees, and the transportation check from Kimberly would come in the mail. Things always have a way of working themselves out, if you only have faith. Family. My parents and siblings have been SO supportive of me, as well as my godmother. They constantly tell me how well I've done as a single mom, and they are always there when I need them. I love being a mom. I think it's what I was really meant to be. I struggle a bit with the fact that my oldest is now living in Indiana and my youngest is going off to college in the fall. I'll have an empty nest and I'm not so sure I'm going to like that, because sometimes I feel as though being a mom is who I am. Friends. I have GREAT friends! Some of my friends have come into my life for just a short time, but have meant the world to me. Others stick with me through my happy times and my bitchy times. They support me, some go on photo adventures with me, and some will meet me to have a Diet Coke or Smirnoff Ice!
So, take the advice of the graduation speakers. Do what you love and be sure to keep God, family and friends in your life. Good luck to all the graduates of 2013. The world is waiting for you. Go out and make a difference!

2014 Graduates - you're just beginning your senior year. It will go by SO quickly! Enjoy it. Participate in school activities. Be sure to book your senior portrait session early to get a time that works for you. I still have openings for most weeks during the summer, so give me a call and we can get your session booked!
]]>I have a group of photography friends who love to go on "photo adventures." We'll just pick a destination, and head out with our cameras, tripods and a sense of adventure. We'll often stop along the way for lunch or dinner and usually a bag or two of Skittles or Cheetos! We have become family.
Last night conditions were favorable to be able to see the Northern Lights. I have seen them twice in my lifetime and photographed them once. It was truly an awe inspiring moment. My friend Gary and I headed north to find the darkest spot possible, away from the lights of the city. We talked about photography, family and bats! We stood in the snow and the cold for hours waiting to catch a glimpse of the dancing colors of the northern lights, but the clouds had other ideas.
See, the thing with taking an adventure is that if things do pan out the way you think they will, there is always something else to see and photograph. We have never gone on an adventure and come back with nothing. That's what makes it an adventure. If you go to Horicon Marsh to photograph the birds on the marsh, and there aren't any, you just head down the road to the first dead end road you find. It reminds me of the Robert Frost poem. Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled and it has made all the difference.
Life is like that. Gary and I would have been perfectly content to stay home, but we chose to take a chance on seeing the northern lights. Did we see them? No. Did we enrich our lives by getting out last night? Yes!
Go on an adventure. You don't even need to be a photographer. Head to the nearest State Park, lake, or nature preserve. Take a friend, your kids, or go by yourself. Look at all the beauty around you and start taking your own adventures!

With less than 7 weeks left of school, thoughts are turning to graduation parties, summer jobs, and fun in the sun. Seniors, be sure to enjoy the last days of high school. Spend time with friends and participate in activities, it will be June before you know it!
]]>Before you know it, you and your son or daughter will be looking for a photographer to take his or her senior portraits. So, how do you choose a senior portrait photographer that is right for your son or daughter?
